Antibiotic Fiber Treatment
What is periodontal disease - and do I have it? Yes, your dentist has diagnosed some degree of periodontal disease and unfortunately it doesn't go away by itself. Periodontal disease starts when bacteria form a sticky film along the gumline. This film, known as plaque, irritates the gums if not effectively removed by brushing and flossing. Eventually, the disease process can destroy the tissue that holds the teeth in place, as well as the bone that supports the teeth -leading to tooth loss. Why is my dentist recommending ACTISITE® therapy? Your dentist has found a periodontal pocket -an area where the gum has separated from the tooth. Bacteria that form in this pocket are not easily removed and can cause infection. As part of your treatment program, your dentist has recommended ACTISITE® Fiber Therapy. What is ACTISITE® and how does it work? Your dentist is recommending that an ACTSITE® Periodontal Fiber - about as thick as dental floss - be inserted in your periodontal pocket. The fiber contains the antibiotic tetracycline, and releases this medicine into the pocket to help kill the bacteria and treat the infection. After the antibiotic treats the gum infection, you should expect a reduction in the depth of the pocket - and the area will be easier for you to keep healthy. Significant improvement may not be immediately noticeable. What's involved in the ACTISITE® procedure? After preparing the pocket, your dentist will insert the fiber and will secure it with a dental adhesive to keep it in place for 10 days. Then, at your next appointment, the fiber will be removed. There are no stitches or dental surgery involved with this procedure. Is the ACTSITE® procedure uncomfortable? Ninety percent of patients experience no discomfort during the procedure. Be sure to let your dentist know if you experience pain or swelling at anytime during ACTISITE® therapy. Can I eat whatever I want with the ACTISITE® fiber in place? Certain foods may loosen or dislodge the fiber. So you'll have to avoid eating hard or crunchy foods like French bread, peanuts, raw vegetables or sticky foods. Can I continue to brush and floss? Yes - just avoid brushing or flossing the area being treated with ACTISITE® fiber. What happens when the fiber is removed? Immediately after removal, there may be a small gap between your tooth and gum, and the area may be temporarily inflamed. As the gum tissue heals, the separation will close leaving less of a pocket, and the gum will assume a healthy color and appearance.
